(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Health has received 18 bids from consultancy firms interested in providing design and supervision services for the construction of a new National Public Health Reference Laboratory.
According to the tender minutes published by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), consultancy firms hail from countries like Guyana, the United Kingdom, Italy, Bangladesh, Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America, Japan, Germany, Canada and Bulgaria.
The ministry’s expression of interest stated that the government received financing from the world bank for the ‘One Health Project’ and intends to use part of the proceeds to procure consulting services covering both the pre-contract and construction phases of the project.
The wider Guyana One Health Project, valued at US$22 million, was announced by the world bank in a press release in March last year. The project aims to strengthen the country’s ability to prevent, prepare for and respond to health emergencies, using a one health approach that integrates human, animal and environmental health systems. It is funded by a US$15 million grant from the pandemic fund and a US$7 million credit from the world bank’s international development association.
Among its components, the project will support upgrading and decentralising the national laboratory network, including transforming the National Public Health Reference Laboratory into a modern, state-of-the-art facility.
Meanwhile, speaking at the strengthening clinical capacity for the management of advanced HIV disease in Guyana workshop last Monday, Minister Anthony highlighted plans to strengthen Guyana’s laboratory and disease-surveillance capabilities.
The minister disclosed that the new reference laboratory, when constructed, will be equipped with improved technology to enhance the country’s capacity to conduct molecular surveillance and detect infections earlier.
“These investments will strengthen Guyana’s capacity to respond to emerging infectious diseases,” the minister said, adding that local laboratories could eventually serve as reference laboratories for specific conditions.
He noted that new technologies and diagnostic techniques will increasingly be employed to strengthen the country’s ability to identify infections earlier and respond more effectively to emerging health threats.
