$25M water supply system for new Monkey Mountain Secondary School
(Kaieteur News) – The new Monkey Mountain Secondary School in Region Eight will soon get a $25 million water supply system ensuring access to potable water for staff and students.
According to information provided on the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), the $25,410,000 contract was awarded to Proconstruct Solutions.
While the water system will be used by the new school, this publication understands that back in April 2022 the village got a $32.7 million water supply system which was commissioned by Minister of Housing Collin Croal.

It was reported by the ministry that the new well was drilled through rocks at a depth of 100 meters in central Monkey Mountain, where schools and health centre are located. It now provides access to 95 per cent of residents.
The ministry stated that the community which is home to some 800 residents utilised an existing gravity-fed system, which is deteriorated and could not supply adequate water. This system supplied water to the central area, while Section Two, which is approximately 2 kilometers away, has a separate system that pumps water from a nearby creek.

The Monkey Mountain Secondary School is a new school being established in the Amerindian community.
Back in July 2024, former Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand and her team turned the sod for the new $208 million edifice.
When completed, the school will cater to the educational needs of students from the communities of Monkey Mountain, Taruka and Tusseneng. The complex will also have a teachers’ quarter and a small dormitory for the children of Taruka and Tusseneng.
The project includes also provisions of facilities such as laboratories, an Information Technology lab, and a library– ensuring that students have access to modern learning resources upon completion. During the simple sod turning ceremony, Minister Manickchand highlighted the importance of the new school, stating that it will alleviate the burden on existing educational facilities such as Paramakatoi by accommodating an average 250 secondary-aged students.
The ministry reported that students from these communities currently travel significant distances to access secondary education, often facing logistical challenges due to the limited availability of schools in the region.
