…as industrial demand races toward 3,000 GWh

(Kaieteur News) – Industrial electricity sales are projected to surge to nearly 2,783 GWh by 2030, exceeding Guyana’s total electricity generation for 2026, according to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Development and Expansion Plan 2026–2030.

The projection, which excludes Linden, highlights the scale of expected industrial expansion and the growing pressure that will be placed on the national power grid over the next four years. The GPL plan projects that residential electricity sales will reach 4,467 GWh by 2030, driven largely by ongoing and planned housing expansion, while commercial sales are expected to reach 1,249.6 GWh.

However, the figures rise further when the broader national grid projections with the inclusion of Linden are considered. By 2030, grid-connected industrial sales are projected at 2,846.6 GWh, compared with 1,315.6 GWh for the commercial sector and 4,854.5 GWh for residential consumers. The projections follow the expected integration of Linden into the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) by 2029.

For 2029, industrial sales are projected at 2,177.3 GWh, while commercial sales are expected to reach 1,177.3 GWh and residential sales 3,705 GWh. The figures for the years preceding Linden’s integration are considerably lower. The latest projections underscore the extraordinary expansion expected in Guyana’s electricity demand.

As previously reported by this publication on 20^th August , GPL’s Transmission and Distribution Expansion Plan 2026–2030 projects that peak electricity demand will climb from 318 MW in 2026 to 1,671 MW by 2030. Total electricity demand is also projected to explode from approximately 2,000 GWh this year to 10,441 GWh by 2030—more than five times the current level.

The GPL document said the projections are based on the combined effects of residential expansion, commercial and industrial growth, and the integration of Linden into the national grid. “These projections inform required capacity planning, infrastructure investment, and operational readiness across the national grid to achieve the planning objectives,” the document stated.

The plan also anticipates significant improvements in the efficiency and reliability of the electricity system as major transmission and distribution investments are implemented. According to GPL, these investments are expected to reduce technical and non-technical losses while improving SAIFI and SAIDI reliability indicators. More efficient use of generated electricity is also expected to translate into increased energy sales and revenue for the utility. Under the Base Case scenario, potential electricity sales are projected to average approximately 4,966 GWh, representing an average annual growth rate of 51.5%, or about 1,566 GWh per year. Meeting that level of demand will depend heavily on a number of major generation and network investments now at various stages of development.

These include the Gas-to-Energy project, the proposed Amaila Falls Hydropower Project, utility-scale solar developments under the Guyana Utility Scale Photovoltaic Program (GUYSOL), additional solar PV facilities planned by GPL, and extensive transmission and distribution upgrades. The projects are intended not only to expand generation capacity, but also to strengthen the reliability and resilience of the national grid as Guyana’s economy becomes increasingly energy-intensive.

With industrial consumption alone projected to approach 3,000 GWh annually by 2030, GPL’s expansion plan points to an electricity system that will have to grow at an unprecedented pace to keep up with Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy.
