Nigg fatal accident… Dr. Ramayya rejects drunk-driving claims, released on $200,000 station bail
(Kaieteur News) – Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya of Whim Village, Corentyne, was released on $200,000 station bail on Tuesday following a fatal accident on Saturday night that claimed the life of 42-year-old pedestrian Ishwarnauth Bisram.
According to reports, Ramayya’s vehicle struck Bisram as he was attempting to cross the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne.
Ramayya, a prominent political figure in Region Six and former Regional Executive Officer (REO), was taken into police custody on Saturday evening and released at around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, according to information reaching Kaieteur News.

In an exclusive interview with this publication hours after his release, Ramayya described the incident as unfortunate and maintained that he was not driving under the influence of alcohol.
Ramayya said he was returning home from a wake at Reliance, East Canje, Berbice, when the accident occurred.
“I left the wake house about 9:05, and I got to the main road and I was coming home, heading east on the public road. When I reached Nigg, nothing was in front of me then. All of a sudden, this man came across the road from the southern side across to the northern side of the road. I made contact. He came straight into the car, directly into the middle. I hit this man with my right-side light, and he fell and rolled on the other side,” Ramayya explained.
He said that after driving approximately 200 feet, he stopped his vehicle and walked back to the scene. He then sent an acquaintance to the Albion Police Station to report the accident.
Several men subsequently assisted Bisram into a vehicle, which transported him to the Port Mourant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Ramayya was subsequently taken into police custody.
Following the incident, family members of Bisram demanded justice, while several individuals alleged that Ramayya had been driving under the influence of alcohol.
Ramayya strongly denied the allegation.
“I don’t drink,” he stated.
He also referred to a breathalyser test conducted by police on Saturday night, which, according to information provided to him, recorded 11 micrograms of alcohol—below the legal limit.
Ramayya further pointed to his driving history in rejecting suggestions that he had been driving recklessly or while intoxicated.
“Over 58 years I have my licence, I never had an accident. I never go to a police station; I never sleep in a lockup. Fifty-eight years, not one accident. My record is completely clear,” he said.
Ramayya said the incident has left him deeply shaken and has taken a toll on his health. However, he said he is prepared to have the matter adjudicated by the court and hopes to vindicate himself through the legal process.
Meanwhile, Bisram, a father of three, was a well-known businessman from Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice. He was formerly of the Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne.
Police investigations into the fatal accident are continuing.
