After spending $253M for Micobie Secondary School, govt. to spend $135M more to build labs
(Kaieteur News) – After spending $253 million for the construction of the Micobie Secondary School back in July 2024, the government through the Ministry of Education plans to spend approximately $135 million more on the school project, this time, to construct laboratories.
The construction of labs will be done at Block C of the school, the ministry noted in its initial tender notice.
It was revealed that 40 contractors applied for the project, which opened recently at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB). It is estimated to cost $135,578,181.
Media reports state that the project faced several delays and is yet to be commissioned.
Back in July 2024, former Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand and her team joined residents of Micobie to turn the sod to commence construction of the $253,561,500 school. The original contract was awarded to NK Engineering Services through a competitive bidding process. The ministry had announced that the project was scheduled for completion within six months. At the time it was disclosed by the ministry that already, an initial mobilisation amount of $76,068,450 was provided on the project.
According to the ministry’s information, the $253 million contract catered for a staff room for teachers and 10 classrooms, including five specialised labs for science, IT, home economics, visual arts, and library services.
At the sod-turning ceremony, Minister Manickchand noted the importance of the school and told residents that they are to hold the contractors accountable to deliver on their promise.
Meanwhile, in May 2025 while speaking at the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference, Minister Manickchand announced that her ministry will be terminating the $253 million contract for the construction of the Micobie Secondary School in Region Eight.
The minister told village leaders that while her ministry has been rolling out projects and programmes to provide an improved quality of education, it is experiencing some challenges.
Detailing one such challenge, she said, “we are about to terminate the contract for Micobie Secondary because the person who won that bid…we have problems with them finishing on time, we have problems with them doing it the way we want it done.”
She added that in some hinterland areas, the weather hinders the transport of materials to the project site. “Micobie has no legitimate reason in my respectful view and my considered view as to why he couldn’t start it so we have those challenges,” she said.
New Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Eight, Marti De Souza during a visit back in May this year, assured parents that everything would be done to ensure students could occupy the facility by the new school term (September).
