Dear Editor,
On behalf of my wife, family and friends I hereby offer my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones and in other way been traumatized as a result of the MV Barima disaster. A lot has been said and a lot will be said.
As a nation we await an independent and credible investigation and report into the Barima Tragedy. However, knowing Guyana and its proclivity for propaganda, posturing and pettiness, key and vital for the next stage is the identification of members and a chairperson of whatever committee or commission, or whatever it may be called, to inquire and investigate all of the circumstances. If those persons identified are known or perceived to be sympathetic of the administration, the whole exercise will be a sham and a waste of time and money.
President Ali will be well-advised to use this sad and sorry situation to consult all non-PPP sectors of parliament, people with experience in the Transport and Harbours Sector (maritime), and citizens who utilise the service. The consultation must be transparent.
The president must neither falter nor fail, he must believe, as I do, that every burden can become a beacon light for a bright future, and use the opportunity for redemption time.
Sincerely,
Hamilton Green

A ship’s lifespan is 30 years, or whenever the builders die. Barima born 1939, should be decomisioned and scrapped 1969, due to metal fatigue. Ships have 2 lines painted on the hull, the tare( empty) and the gvw( loaded). When the water touches the gvw line, STOP loading your boat.
