(Kaieteur News) – Travellers between Guyana and Suriname will soon be able to book their ferry crossings online, following a joint bilateral meeting between the boards of the Canawaima Ferry Service of Guyana and the Republic of Suriname held on Wednesday in Nickerie, Suriname.
According to the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW), the meeting was convened to chart strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening and modernising the ferry service, with the new booking platform emerging as one of several key outcomes.
Both countries committed to rolling out an integrated online booking system designed to cut waiting times and improve overall customer convenience. Once operational, the platform will allow passengers and vehicle owners to make advance reservations and purchase tickets around the clock. The system will also support automated booking confirmations and real-time capacity management, giving operators better tools for planning and scheduling.
To support the rollout, both boards committed to maintaining a reliable and continuous daily ferry schedule, and agreed to collaborate closely on the system’s successful implementation.
Discussions also covered the planned drydocking of the MV Canawaima and an overhaul of its main engines, work aimed at ensuring the vessel’s continued safe and reliable operation. Proposals for technical cooperation to support this effort will be considered through the appropriate processes. During the maintenance period, arrangements will be made to keep ferry operations running via a replacement vessel.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and the Republic of Suriname to the ongoing development of the Canawaima Ferry Service. Discussions centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation, improving operational performance, enhancing service quality, and reinforcing institutional resilience.
The ministry noted that as the primary maritime link between the two countries, the ferry service plays a vital role in facilitating the movement of passengers, vehicles, and cargo, while supporting trade, tourism, and regional integration.
Both boards also reaffirmed their commitment to delivering a safe, reliable, and efficient service for the mutual benefit of citizens of both nations.
The Canawaima Ferry Service operates between South Drain, Suriname, and Moleson Creek, Corentyne, Guyana. It is jointly managed by Guyana’s MoPW, through the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD), and its counterpart agency in Suriname.
