(Kaieteur News) Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who has previously criticised the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on several issues, has reaffirmed her country’s commitment to the regional bloc, revealing that some of her concerns were resolved during the recently concluded 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM in Saint Lucia.
Speaking at the closing press conference on Wednesday, Persad-Bissessar said that despite the concerns she had previously raised about CARICOM’s operations, her government’s commitment to the regional body remains unchanged.
“My position from the start remains to now, and that position has been: whilst I would have levelled some concerns about the operations of CARICOM, I have always said Trinidad and Tobago remains committed to CARICOM. We have unwavering support for CARICOM, for us to work together to better the region and, of course, all our citizens,” she said.
Persad-Bissessar said discussions under the chairmanship of Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, along with cooperation from the other Heads of Government, helped resolve several of the issues she had raised.
“With the cooperation of the other heads, we’ve been able to iron out some of the concerns I had. So, my position has not changed. I remain committed,” she said.
She further argued that disagreements among member states should not be viewed as a threat to regional integration, but rather as a healthy part of resolving differences.
“In a family, you have issues… We must not put our heads down in the sand like ostriches. We raise them when they are [issues] and try to find resolutions. So, we’ve been able, in this 51st CARICOM Heads meeting, to iron out some of those differences, and I think we are better as we go forward,” Persad-Bissessar said.
