Family of three homeless after fire destroys South Ruimveldt home

(Kaieteur News) – A family of three is homeless after a fire of unknown origin tore through their two-storey wood-and-concrete house at Lot 172 Sunflower Circle, South Ruimveldt Park, on Thursday morning.

Occupant Lennox Samuels said the blaze broke out around 8:30 a.m., just as he was stepping out the door.

“I was just leaving when my girlfriend shouted, ‘Fire in the house!’” Samuels recalled.

He said he rushed back upstairs in a bid to save their belongings but was quickly driven back by thick smoke and intense flames, forced to flee empty-handed.

Samuels said he was unable to salvage any of his possessions, including equipment and materials tied to his business. He estimates his losses at millions of dollars.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) in a statement posted on its Facebook page said that it when firefighters arrived at the scene, the building was “fully engulfed in flames, with nearby homes under threat”.

“Firefighters immediately commenced coordinated firefighting operations and worked swiftly to contain the blaze, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent properties,” the GFS said.

The fire gutted the upper flat of the home, while the lower flat sustained water damage from firefighting efforts.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigators say the probe is continuing.
