Congregational Union hopes for speedy convening of MV Barima COI
…Hopes findings can bring closure to families
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Congregational Union has extended condolences to the families of those who died in the MV Barima disaster, describing the July 18 tragedy as an unprecedented loss of life for the country and expressing hope that the newly named Commission of Inquiry (COI) will begin its work “very soon.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Union said the country had never before recorded the loss of so many Guyanese lives in a single disaster, and mourned what it called a significant loss of human potential, pointing in particular to the many young people and children who died when the vessel capsized en route to Port Kaituma, Region One.
The statement reflected at length on the manner of the tragedy, noting that both young and old passengers died together in rough, dark waters, and said the circumstances surrounding the loss have made it difficult for families, friends, and sympathisers to move forward.
Turning to matters of faith, the Union invoked several passages of Scripture to offer comfort to the bereaved, including a request for divine mercy drawn from Psalm 85:7, and an assurance from Psalm 23 that grieving families need not fear even in the darkest of circumstances.
On the matter of accountability, the Union noted that members have already been named to a Commission of Inquiry into the disaster and said it trusts the panel’s eventual findings and recommendations will bring “some degree of comfort and satisfaction” to grieving families and the wider Guyanese public.
The statement closed with a further extension of condolences “in this hour of grief and pain.”
The MV Barima capsized on the night of July 18 while en route from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, Region One, killing 73 people, including children, with at least 30 more still missing at sea. Two crew members, including the vessel’s captain and the goods superintendent have since been jointly charged with murder in connection with the disaster.
