(Kaieteur News) – Tyrone De Groot, 27, a vendor of Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 after he was charged for possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Police said in a statement, De Groot was arrested on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, and subsequently charged under Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10. He appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Friday July 3, 2026, before Her Worship, Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty, where the charge was read to him.
After his not guilty plea, bail was granted. He is required to report to the police every first and third Friday. The matter was adjourned to Friday, July 24, 2026, for disclosure.
On July 2, this publication reported that a vendor was in police custody after a search was conducted and approximately four pounds of marijuana was found at Ruimveldt Public Road, in the vicinity of Massy Supermarket.
In a statement on Wednesday, police said an investigation was launched into the matter.
“Ranks, acting on information, carried out an intelligence-led operation in the area where they contacted a 27-year-old male vendor of River View, Ruimveldt. During the exercise, a search was conducted, and one black plastic bag containing a quantity of suspected narcotics was found,” police said.
The vendor was placed under arrest and escorted to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, where the narcotics were weighed in his presence and totaled four pounds, before being lodged.
