(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh one thing yuh could set yuh watch by in Guyana. When rainy season arrive, potholes does spring up faster than jumbi umbrellas. Rain and pressure is like husband and wife—put dem together pon a public road and before yuh could say “Ministry of Public Works,” another crater open up.
Some roads don’t even have potholes anymore. Dem got potholes with roads around dem.
Is amazing how water does discover every weak spot in a road. A lil shower fall, then a few trucks pass, and next thing yuh know, one hole deep enough to qualify as a fish pond. If yuh unlucky enough to hit one at speed, yuh rim bend, yuh shock buss, yuh axle warp and every tooth in yuh mouth perform a different dance.
Dem boys seh some motorists now driving with one eye on de road and de next eye on de mechanic bill. Forget defensive driving. Nowadays is evasive driving. People weaving from side to side like dem auditioning for a Formula One race, except de obstacle ain’t another car—it is one family of potholes waiting to adopt yuh vehicle.
Some of dem holes so old, dem deserve house lots and transport. If NASA ever looking for places to test lunar vehicles, dem ain’t got to fly to the moon. Just send de astronauts down to Guyana after two days of steady rain.
And don’t mind if yuh see drivers suddenly swerve without warning. Is not because dem texting. Is because dem spot one pothole big enough to swallow a small car. Sometimes avoiding one hole does put yuh straight into another one. Choosing between potholes is like choosing which mosquito yuh prefer to bite yuh.
Dem boys seh after every heavy spell of rain, de engineers and road inspectors should mount an expedition. Walk, drive, drone—do whatever necessary—and start patching dem holes before dem multiply. Potholes don’t heal by themselves. Left alone, dem does reproduce.
Because every pothole patched early saves a rim, a shock, an axle—and probably a few colourful words from drivers whose vocabulary suddenly becomes very creative the moment dem wheel disappear into one of Guyana’s newest tourist attractions.
Talk half. Leff half.
