This publication previously reported that the facilities will support the fisherfolk in the Goed Fortuin area, making the area a more organised and secure space for them.
According to a June 2025 Department of Public Information article, President Irfaan Ali had visited the Goed Fortuin fishing area where he announced plans to construct a cold storage and build the wharf, along with other upgrades.
DPI reported that among the immediate interventions promised were the rehabilitation of the non-functional koker, installation of proper lighting to enable safe operations and the construction of walkways, and a wharf for docking and offloading.
Wherever there is a need for dredging that will also be done, the president noted.
“A key element of the transformation is the creation of a designated space for small-scale retail and holding activities. This would allow the vendors and fishers to sell and store goods directly on-site. It will be complemented by enhanced security and essential utilities to support daily operations,” DPI reported.
The project forms part of NDIA’s $81 billion allocation which was approved in the 2026 national budget.
