Man who embezzled $16M gets 7 years in jail
(Kaieteur News) – Hemraj Singh Pahalad, the Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice (WCB) man, who was charged with two counts of embezzlement by a clerk or servant and one count of larceny, was sentenced to five years in jail on Friday.
The sentence was handed down by Justice Deborah Kumar at the Berbice High Court in New Amsterdam.
Pahalad was sentenced to five years in prison for larceny and two years seven months for embezzlement. The offences were committed more than a decade ago.

The Woodley Park man reportedly committed the crimes while he was employed by Ramdial Ramoutar in 2013.
A 12-member jury was empanelled on March 18, and on March 26 found him guilty of two of the offences, and not guilty of one. Pahalad throughout the trial maintained his innocence and even accused his former employer of framing him.
During the trial, he was represented by attorney Charlyn Artiga, and the State was represented by Prosecutor Marisa Edwards.
The first count of embezzlement, for which he was found not guilty, stated that between February 12–16, 2013, he allegedly embezzled the sum of $3,529,750, which he received from Sahidrul Satar on behalf of his employer. The second count, which the jury deemed him guilty, occurred within the same period, and involved $3,071,500 received from Karamdeo Mangru.
Pahalad was also found him guilty of larceny where he reportedly stole a total of 1,051 bags of flour of various types—including Thunderbolt 100-1 lb, 2 kg, 1 kg, high fiber, and self-rising flour—worth $10,127,995, all belonging to Ramoutar.
The accused said that he worked for 15 years with Ramoutar, whom he said is an agent for the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO). Pahalad maintained he has never engaged in malpractices in all his years as an employee there.
Justice Kumar ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
