(Kaieteur News) – Lead parliamentarian for the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), Dr. Terrence Campbell said the decision by government to fire the 10 Regional Executive Officers (REO) was made without due process.
In a video released on Facebook Sunday, Campbell lamented that the officers were also not even made aware of the charge against them, and were denied an opportunity to respond.
“What does it say about this PPP (People’s Progressive Party) government if all 10 of the REOs are corrupt?” Campbell asked. He also questioned the absence of Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand “when the two autocrats that run the PPP – Irfaan Ali and Bharrat Jagdeo – were carrying out these executions.”
The dismissals and new appointments were formalised during a session led by President Ali and Vice President Jagdeo at a meeting last Friday, which included cabinet members, permanent secretaries, and officials from the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), where Ali issued a stern mandate regarding the management of public funds.
Addressing the incoming officers, Ali said “sacred trust” accompanies public office and warned that any breaches in procurement procedures, including involvement with multiple companies or circumventing transparency laws, would result in immediate removal from office.
The president also announced that artificial intelligence will be used to actively monitor regional procurement processes and detect irregularities, with VP Jagdeo noting that every expenditure must be strictly measured against its direct contribution to national development and citizen welfare.
Meanwhile, Campbell in his post also spoke about other shortcomings of the PPP calling it “a wicked, evil, corrupt dictatorship in Guyana” that has been using state agencies like the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Revenue Authority against the opposition. He accused the PPP of taking journalists from the independent media and offering them lucrative jobs and contracts in an effort to reduce criticism of the administration.
He also accused the party of withholding payments to newspapers in order to force their closure, as seen in the recent case involving Stabroek News, arguing that the government is intent on undermining press freedom in Guyana, while also refusing to convene parliament or allow the Public Accounts Committee to be established and function effectively in scrutinising the country’s finances.
Campbell observed that the government possesses resources beyond anything available to previous administrations, particularly at a time when gold and oil prices are exceptionally high and significant windfall profits are being earned. However, he noted that much of this wealth benefits the friends, families, favourites, and “cronies of the PPP,” while ordinary citizens struggle with the rising cost of living, including having to pay $100 for just two slices of bread.
