Berbice taxi driver’s brother-in-law charged with manslaughter
(Kaieteur News) – The 21-year-old perpetrator behind the death of Oswain Lawson was remanded to prison on Friday after making his appearance at the Albion Magistrate’s Court in Corentyne.
Frank McCallister, a contractor of Heatburn Village, East Bank Berbice, stood before Magistrate Michelle Matthias, and was charged with manslaughter.
The charge stated that on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, while at Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice, he unlawfully killed Lawson, a taxi driver of Lot 46 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
McCallister is Lawson’s brother-in-law. It is unclear what prompted the incident, which took place early Tuesday morning. Reports have confirmed that Lawson, a father of two, was on Monday evening partying with some friends at a hangout spot at Edinburgh Village. Moments after, just about 01:30am, he was reportedly stabbed while seated in his car. According to reports, the wounded man sought to drive away from the location, but his car crashed into a roadside stall and ended up in a nearby trench not too far from where he was reportedly attacked.

Police in Region Six, after ruling the death a vehicular accident, updated it to murder following further investigation. McCallister was later arrested on Wednesday.
He is represented by attorney Chandra Sohan.
The prosecution objected to bail, considering the seriousness and nature of the offense.
Magistrate Matthias upheld the position of the prosecution and denied bail for the accused. The matter continues on June 4, 2026, at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
A post-mortem examination performed on Wednesday by government pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan. It was determined that Lawson died as a result of multiple incise stab wounds, hemorrhaging and lung failure.
