(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) on Friday signed a contract worth US$27.3M with PowerChina International Group Limited for further upgrades to the national grid.
In a statement on Friday the company said that the contract is “for the engineering, procurement and construction of a 60 MWh / 30 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), along with associated substation expansions and systems integration…”
GPL’s Head of Executive Management Committee Kesh Nandlall led the signing team and he was accompanied by Divisional Director Ryan Ross and other personnel from GPL and PowerChina International Group Limited.
“Under the project, two 30 MWh / 15 MW lithium-ion battery systems will be installed at the New Sophia and Goedverwagting substations in Region Four. The project will add 30 MW of power to GPL’s grid and significantly improve the stability and reliability of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS),” GPL said.
The company added that the system will be integrated with the Guyana National Control Centre (GNCC), through a modern SCADA, Energy Management and Automatic Generation Control systems, including spare parts, maintenance services and training for the company’s engineers, with an expected completion date in eight months.
Addressing the gathering Nandlall noted that the project represents a major step in strengthening the country’s electrical infrastructure, explaining that the Battery Energy Storage System, is aimed at improving power storage, through its black start capabilities and will support the integration of renewable energy sources in keeping with the Loc carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 goals.
The company said it remains committed to investing in modern infrastructure aimed at improving the reliability, efficiency and sustainability of electricity supply across Guyana.
