(Kaieteur News) – A 35-year-old motorcyclist died on Sunday after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck at the junction of the Mandela to Eccles Highway and Rome Access Road, East Bank Demerara.
Dead is Andre Jnu Lewis of Guyhoc Park, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
The Guyana Police Force in a statement said that a 24-year-old man of D’Edward Village, West Coast Berbice, was identified as the driver of the truck.
The accident occurred around 18:16hrs.
The police reported that the motorcyclist was heading south along the eastern drive lane of the Mandela Avenue to Eccles Highway, while the motor lorry was heading east along the northern drive lane of Rome Access Road.
While at the intersection of the Mandela Avenue to Eccles Highway and Rome Access Road, the police said that the truck driver allegedly drove into the path of the motorcyclist, resulting in the front portion of the motorcycle colliding with the left-side rear portion of the truck.
“As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist sustained injuries about his body. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned and the motorcyclist was examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead at the scene,” the police stated.
Lewis’ body was then taken to a city mortuary where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the truck driver, and no trace of alcohol was found on his breath. He is assisting with investigations.
