Justice Cummings-Edwards sworn in Chief Justice of Turks and Caicos
(Kaieteur News) – Former acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards was on Tuesday, officially sworn as Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) during a special sitting at the island’s Court of Appeal.
Several of the TCI’s legal and political dignitaries were in attendance of the swearing in ceremony where the Guyanese jurist was praised for her steady and unwavering contribution to the Caribbean jurisprudence.
Welcoming the new Chief Justice, Attorney General of the TCI, Rhonda lee Braithwaite Knowles told the assembly that Cummings-Edwards appointment is marked by her extensive experience and commitment to the rule of law.
The attorney general noted that the appointment continues the very high standards set by the Judicial Service Commission set by these islands.
Braithwaite-Knowles said that Justice Cummings-Edwards comes to the new role with expansive experience as a senior judicial officer in Guyana.

She noted that under her tenure the Guyana’s judicial system experienced improvement in case management, the introduction of specialized courts, restorative justice digitisation and expansion in better access to justice particularly in the remote areas of the country.
“Her contributions to judicial training highlight her dedication to judicial independence, integrity and efficiency in the administration of justice.”
Director of Public Prosecutor (DPP), Jeremy Taylor K.C praised Justice Cummings Edwards for her wisdom and reputation that precedes her.
“In fact, a Google AI search of you brings up your famous dissenting judgment in the case of [Walter] Ramsahoye and the Kaieteur News. You have imparted some truths; there is jurisprudence to which you have a material and significant contribution,” he told the judge.
In her remarks, President of Court of Appeal in the TCI, Justice Alice Yorke Soo noted that the new chief justice “brings to the role 35 years of experience marked by steady progression and intellectual rigor.”
“Madame Justice Cummings-Edwards has shown unwavering support to the public good…Throughout her distinguished career she represented the hallmarks of discipline and excellence.”
As a lawyer, the Court of Appeal President noted that Justice Cummings-Edwards has exhibited meticulous preparation sound judgment, and deep insight and understanding of the law.
In her address to the special sitting, the former chancellor said she is honoured to be appointed as the chief justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
“I am grateful for the confidence that has been reposed in me, I look forward to working collaboratively with my judicial colleagues in the legal profession and senior justice partners to build on the strong foundation that has been established and to further strengthen the delivery of justice in a manner that is fair, efficient and accessible to all. I remain committed to upholding the rule of law and serving the people of these islands with integrity and dedication.”
