Install culverts at the sides of the roads
Dear Editor,
Given that the road network has been upgraded with improved surfaces and lane additions in some areas, the next step towards supporting the road network is the installation of culverts along the sides of the roads to ensure that the water runoff is quickly carried away. Most of our road network is located next to the drainage system (trenches) currently in place.
The use of precast concrete culverts will support the maintenance of the road network by preventing premature road erosion and sediment buildup in the drainage system that results in flooding. Continual maintenance will be required on a quarterly basis (every 3 months), and the NDCs in the villages and the city councils in the towns and the capital will need to effectively manage this process. This encompasses the removal of vegetation from the inlets and outlets and the clearing of debris and sediment to ensure that our rainy seasons have minimal impact on flooding.
As the government improves garbage disposal, drainage pump effectiveness and sea defense upgrades, the build out and maintenance of the culvert network will provide the additional support needed for improved flood prevention. CRG recommends that professional, reputable, and experienced Dutch and American companies be used in partnership for this major nationwide project.
We must diversify our supplier base and not over rely on the Chinese government for these types of infrastructure projects. The Dutch and the Americans have the technology and expertise needed to help upgrade our current drainage system adjacent to the road networks in the villages, towns, and the capital. It is time to further leverage our old and new alliances and provide them with an opportunity to rebuild their teamwork while helping. It will also give the Americans an opportunity to see the country and better understand our high level of independence and that we do not allow other countries to have undue influence over us, not even China. We must also ensure that our local construction companies gain experience by working alongside them.
