(Kaieteur News) – Four bandits, one armed with a handgun, on Monday pounced on a Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) business and robbed its cashier and a customer while making good their escape with millions in cash and other items.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the robbery occurred at about 14:50h. Preliminary investigations revealed that a 43-year-old woman was at the time of the robbery with her family paying for an item she had just collected from an isle when she observed two masked men clad in orange jumpsuits enter the building and went to the cashier.
The woman, a vendor of Providence, EBD reported that one of the suspects pointed a handgun at the cashier and ordered her to move away from the register.
“The unarmed suspect then reportedly went around the counter and began removing cash from the cash drawer and placing it into a haversack, while the armed suspect stood guard. The armed suspect also allegedly relieved the 43-year-old woman of her purse and cellphone,” the police reported.
The suspects allegedly carted off with G$4,140,000 from the business, while the vendor was relieved of one black purse valued at G$5,000 which contained $90,000 in cash, along with her driver’s licence, identification card and bank card.
Investigators learned also that the two suspects then walked down the stairs to the lower flat, where two other men were awaiting them on the ground floor. The four men then exited the building, hopped on to two black Honda XR motorcycles which had no number plates and escaped in the northern direction along the Diamond Public Road.
The matter is being investigated.
