(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works on Tuesday announced that phase one of the $800 million Matthew’s Ridge Airstrip in Region One which is approximately 2200 feet is now completed.
The Ministry said that the previously earthen runway has now been upgraded to a reinforced eight-inch-thick concrete surface and outfitted with a parking space for aircraft.
“The next 2000 feet of works are underway, utilizing the Community Participation Model, under the supervision of the Ministry’s Special Projects Unit,” the ministry disclosed.
Kaieteur News understands that when fully completed, the 4200×80 feet upgrade will elevate the facility to a Tier 1 aviation hub, capable of handling capacity equivalent to the Eugene F. Correia International .
The ministry noted also that Matthew’s Ridge serves as a vital transportation hub for the manganese mining community and surrounding villages.
The new runway is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, support economic expansion, and drastically improve access to essential services for residents.
The ministry initially said that the project is scheduled to be completed in June 2026.
Kaieteur News understands that the project is currently being executed by over 60 residents from the village and the ministry.
The Matthew’s Ridge airstrip is among several airstrips in the hinterland that are being upgraded to climate-resilient structures by the government.
