(Kaieteur News) – Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha announced recently that the government has already identified lands to support the establishment of a new mango cultivation project, with technical input from a visiting team out of Dominica that lately assessed the proposed sites.
According to the minister, the initiative will focus on introducing between 10 and 15 commercially viable mango varieties, with the broader aim of developing a structured mango industry in Guyana. He noted that mangoes are a highly profitable crop with strong regional and international demand, particularly for premium varieties commonly sourced from the Dominican Republic.
Mustapha explained that seedlings will be imported from Dominica to ensure quality planting material, while local farmers and agricultural officers will receive training in modern cultivation techniques, including orchard management, pest control, and post-harvest handling. The project is also expected to explore value-added opportunities such as mango processing for juices, dried fruit, and pulp, which could further expand export potential.
If timelines remain on track, he said initial land preparation and planting activities are expected to commence by mid-year.
