Burrowes School of Art marks 50 years with Castellani House exhibition
(Kaieteur News) – The E.R. Burrowes School of Art’s (BSA) 50th anniversary exhibition was opened to the public last April 10 at Castellani House and will continue through April 30.

According to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the launch highlighted five decades of creativity, cultural expression, and the “enduring impact of the school of art on Guyana’s artistic landscape.”
The BSA was established in 1976 in Georgetown as the country’s leading institution for visual arts education. It developed out of the Working People’s Art Class (WPAC), which was founded in 1948 by Guyanese artist Edward Rupert Burrowes whose goal was to create structured art training opportunities and encourage local talent, an effort that later came under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

The school’s origins trace back to the late 1940s through the WPAC, where Burrowes worked to make art accessible to everyday Guyanese. In 1976, the institution was formally established and named in his honour, continuing his legacy of mentorship and artistic development.
Over time, the school has operated from several locations, including Eccles on the East Bank Demerara and Sophia, before settling at its current home on Carifesta Avenue in Thomas Lands, Georgetown. Its development has been guided by a number of influential figures, including Mr. Agard, George Simon, Agnes Jones, Errol Brewster, and Robert Cummings.
Today, the school offers diploma and certificate programmes in areas such as Fine Arts, Textile Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, Graphic Design, and Leathercraft. It also collaborates with the University of Guyana to ensure its programmes meet accredited standards.
