(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Tuesday launched the National Defence Institute’s Certificate in Defence Studies programme, an initiative aimed at strengthening border security across Guyana’s hinterland, riverine, and maritime regions.
The opening ceremony was held at the Officers’ Mess, Base Camp Ayanganna, marking the start of a 16-week programme designed to enhance the knowledge and capabilities of both military and civilian participants.
The certificate programme comprises five core courses, including strategic studies, human security, and foreign policy analysis. It places strong emphasis on comprehensive security, integrating cyber, maritime, and land operations, while also promoting human development and critical thinking.
The National Defence Institute (NDI) aims to deliver a defence-, security-, and development-focused curriculum tailored for joint services officers and their civilian counterparts. The current cohort includes ranks from the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Police Force, Guyana Prison Service, and Guyana Fire Service.
Delivering the keynote address, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips officially declared the programme open, underscoring its national importance.
“It is the security of the people that matters most. This is not simply the launch of a new programme; rather, it marks a meaningful step forward in our country’s development and in how we prepare for the future of Guyana’s national security, broadly defined,” he said.
He noted that the initiative represents a deliberate, forward-looking investment in human capital.
“This certificate must go beyond the traditional course. It reflects a commitment to developing strategic thinkers, capable leaders, and a security system better prepared to respond to challenges arising from global dynamics, regional developments, and our own internal realities,” Phillips explained.
He added that the programme is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary for effective leadership.
“It is about empowering our men and women to lead with clarity, adapt with confidence, and serve with purpose. Guyana’s security and territorial integrity must always be protected,” he stated.
Echoing similar sentiments, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan highlighted the institute’s role in shaping leadership and strategic thinking within the security sector.
“The National Defence Institute is uniquely positioned to challenge assumptions, foster critical thinking, and develop leaders who can act decisively and serve selflessly,” Khan said.
He also noted that participants will benefit directly from engagement with senior leadership.
“Through this course, the Chief of Defence Staff will interact with participants on key subject matters, adding practical experience and insight to their learning,” he added.
Khan emphasised that national defence extends beyond physical assets. “In the end, the ultimate defence of any nation is not only found in its weapons, but in the quality of the minds that employ and operate them,” he said.
