(Kaieteur News) – In a decisive move to combat rising health risks among young people, UNICEF and Assuria Guyana have partnered to roll out a major initiative aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles among children in Region 4.
The collaboration, formalised this week, will reach approximately 6,000 students, focusing on improving nutrition, boosting physical activity, and introducing hands-on learning programmes such as school gardens. “Good nutrition and physical activity are fundamental to the physical, mental, and social development of children and young people. As chronic diseases increasingly affect younger populations, early intervention is essential to fostering lifelong healthy habits,” stated Mr. Javier Córdoba, Representative a.i. for UNICEF Guyana and Suriname during the launch ceremony.
Mr. Yogindra Arjune, Managing Director of Assuria, underscored the company’s commitment to sustainable development, “Through this partnership, we are investing in the well-being of future generations and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, while strengthening the resilience of our communities.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Education Officer, Ms. Fazia Baksh welcomed the collaboration, noting, “When corporate partners align their resources with the expertise of international organizations such as UNICEF, it creates a powerful platform for advancing social progress.” This partnership reflects a shared commitment to equipping young people with the knowledge and practices necessary to lead healthy and productive lives.
