(TRINIDAD EXPRESS) Trinidad and Tobago is not joining CARICOM in sending humanitarian aid to Cuba.
Instead, Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers says T&T will act independently, in collaboration with agencies on the ground in Cuba.
A media release on Tuesday stated that CARICOM governments were preparing to dispatch humanitarian aid to Cuba, with the effort being coordinated by the CARICOM Secretariat, headquartered in Georgetown, Guyana. The release stated items such as powdered milk, including baby formula; non-perishables such as beans, wheat flour, rice and canned goods; basic medical supplies; solar panels; batteries; and water tanks will be purchased on behalf of member states and shipped to Cuba. It added that the Mexican government will also provide support through its suppliers.
In response to questions from the Express yesterday, Sobers said T&T has been in communication with organisations in Cuba that are well known for their relief efforts. He said T&T expressed its commitment and willingness to send relief supplies and requested a list of items needed to ensure there was no duplication. The minister said this country has always been responsive in sending aid to nations in need, and assistance will also be provided to the people of Cuba.
The Express also questioned Sobers on his position in the Senate on Tuesday, where he declined to answer a series of questions from Independent Senator Anthony Vieira regarding T&T’s position on United States-led efforts to combat narco-terrorism, citing concerns over the public interest. The minister cited Standing Order 26(3), which allows ministers to withhold sensitive information that would be contrary to the public interest.
Sobers on Wednesday maintained this position, reiterating that information related to security and safety must be safeguarded. He said he was not bothered by the criticisms proffered by both Vieira and Opposition Senator Dr. Amery Browne over his refusal to provide the information. “I rarely listen to the PNM A and the PNM B teams. I use my judgment in responding to questions,” Sobers said.
