(TRINIDAD EXPRESS) Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s latest disagreement with Caricom has wrought complete condemnation from the Opposition, which on Thursday deemed her “unfit” to lead the nation.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles that the PM’s actions could hurt ordinary citizens, noting Trinidad and Tobago’s trade in essential goods and services with the rest of the Caribbean Community.
Beckles was responding to Persad-Bissessar’s statements on Wednesday that she does not support the reappointment of Caricom Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett and that T&T will be reducing its financial contribution to the regional group. “I completely condemn Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s most recent reprehensible attack on the Caribbean Community, and her lazy, childish, and irresponsible posturing on the issue of the reappointment of the Secretary General,” Beckles stated.
The Opposition Leader said Persad-Bissessar has “demonstrated that she is unfit to continue in the role of Prime Minister of our nation.” Beckles said the PM must be reminded that CARICOM is the second-largest market for this country’s goods and services, and “the regional backlash she is inviting will only hurt the ordinary citizens and workers who are already under extreme pressure due to the policies of her UNC government.” Stating “we have had enough”, Beckles ended the post with the hashtag “#enoughisenough.”
