(Kaieteur News) – Christopher Ali, the man accused of stabbing a teen more than 25 times about her body, on Thursday, was charged with attempted murder and rape of a minor when he appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.
Ali, 27, of Pepper Street, Edinburgh Village, East Bank Berbice, made his first court appearance before Magistrate Michelle Matthias.
The court heard that between December 1 and 31, 2024 at Heatburn Village, East Bank Berbice, Ali engaged in the sexual penetration of a 15-year-old girl child.
The police prosecutor told the court that the file on the rape charge is complete and that legal advice is still being sought. However, a request was made for disclosure to be held on April 16.
Further, the prosecution objected to bail citing the gravity of the offence, the existence of another serious matter concurrent to this, and the accused being considered a flight risk. The latter position was supported by the fact that Ali, subsequent to the commissioning of the crime, willfully evaded police in Region Six for about two weeks, hiding himself miles up the Berbice River.
The prosecution argued that should the accused be granted bail, there is a strong possibility that he will abscond from the trial. Also, the safety of the complainant was also raised. The prosecution told the court that the teen’s family is worried that should he be released on bail, he would be in contact with the teen, given that he resides a short distance from the victim.
On the attempted murder charge, the court was told that on February 24, 2026 at Heatburn Village, East Bank Berbice, Ali with intent to commit murder unlawfully and maliciously wounded the teen. The prosecution informed the magistrate that further legal advice is being sought, while again objecting to bail on the primary basis that the accused stabbed the teen 25 times, and him being a flight risk.
On March 13, Ali was accosted by individuals up the Berbice River, who assaulted him before turning him over the police. He was subsequently admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
On Thursday morning, the injured man appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court with bandages wrapped about his right hand and leg. He was assisted by police ranks up the stairs and into the courtroom.
Ali told the court that he works at sea, and has been residing at a friend’s house for a few months.
Magistrate Matthias taking into consideration the arguments proffered by the prosecution denied bail and remanded Ali to prison until April 16, 2026.
Ali, upon completion of Thursday’s court matter said, “to God be the glory”.
