(Kaieteur News) – In a major development for kidney care in the region, De Kinderen Regional Hospital will begin offering inpatient dialysis services within the next month, Regional Health Officer (RHO) Dr. Fiaz Hassan announced on Thursday.
The announcement was made during a World Kidney Day observance hosted by the hospital under the theme, “Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health,” highlighting the critical importance of early detection and prevention.

Dr. Hassan revealed that free dialysis services will soon be available nationwide, marking a significant advancement in dialysis care. In addition to De Kinderen Regional Hospital’s new inpatient services, Region Three will also see the establishment of a dedicated dialysis centre at Leonora Cottage Hospital by the end of 2026.
Dr. Sara Baksh, head of internal medicine at De Kinderen, emphasised that kidney disease remains a major, often silent health concern in Guyana, largely driven by hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and unhealthy lifestyles. She urged citizens to prioritise early screening and healthier living.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Dhanraj Ramnandan highlighted that thousands of patients are already benefiting from services at the hospital, underscoring the facility’s role in improving community health.
The World Kidney Day event featured medical presentations, patient testimonials, health exhibitions, and recognition of sponsors and partners. Supporting organisations included the Ministry of Health, the Regional Democratic Council of Region Three, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards, the Guyana Marketing Corporation, as well as private sector and NGO partners.
“The observance reinforced the importance of early detection, healthy lifestyles, and collaborative action in reducing the burden of kidney disease and improving quality of life,” the hospital said.
