(Kaieteur News) – Upgrades to the Karasabai airstrip in Region Nine have been completed, President Irfaan Ali announced on Thursday.
The head of state in a Facebook post said that the project was delivered through a community participation model.
“The airstrip now features a 3,000-foot rigid concrete runway, a parking apron for two aircraft, and modern safety features. The Ministry of Public Works provided the materials, equipment, and technical oversight, while labour came directly from the community,” the Facebook post said.
Kaieteur News reported that the upgrade to the airstrip was being done at a cost $993 million. Works on the project started on January 19, 2026.
The Ministry of Public Work said that the airstrip will also be outfitted with 50 navigational lights to accommodate night operations if necessary. The rehabilitated airstrip will also be painted in accordance with international standards and outfitted with a parking space to accommodate five aircraft.
Karasabai’s Toshao, David Albert told Kaieteur News that the upgrade of the airstrip will significantly boost tourism and agriculture opportunities for communities in the South Pakaraimas.
“Some of the benefits that it will bring to us the residents is that years ago it used to be scheduled flights here and hopefully this would be reinstated back to our community. Also, it will benefit if you have to do a medevac to Georgetown which is health wise, and also residents can now book a flight from here to Georgetown,” he stated.
