Kaieteur Sports – With the growing popularity in the faster game, Tapeball cricket continues to show rapid rise across the nation, seeing this, the Government of Guyana continues to lend strong support to the format widely regarded as one of the most exciting forms of grassroots cricket.
Through the Government’s One Guyana initiative, sports’ enthusiasts will witness a groundbreaking moment for school cricket with the staging of the Mike’s Pharmacy National Secondary Schools Tapeball Cricket Super League, set to bowl off next weekend in Georgetown.
The tournament will be played on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, with matches taking place simultaneously at two iconic city venues; the National Park Tarmac and the National Cultural Centre Tarmac. For two days, the venues will transform into vibrant cricket battlegrounds as some of the country’s most promising young players showcase their talent on the pitch.
Organised by GOAPC, the National Secondary Schools Super League aims to further develop youth cricket while strengthening the rapidly expanding Tapeball culture in Guyana.
Fourteen secondary schools have already been drafted into the competition, reflecting a strong nationwide interest in the initiative. Among the confirmed participants are St Rose’s High, Queen’s College, Berbice High, St Joseph High, Morgan Learning Centre, Chase’s Academic Foundation, Charlestown Secondary, LBI Secondary, Covent Garden Secondary, School of the Nations, Brickdam Secondary, New Central High, and Mackenzie High, with additional schools still seeking registration.
The tournament will feature an exciting eight-a-side format, designed to produce fast-paced, high-scoring matches that highlight the flair and creativity associated with Tapeball cricket.
Organisers say the National Schoolboys’ competition is built on three core pillars — Unity, Passion and Competition — as teams from across Guyana battle not only for bragging rights but also for the opportunity to establish themselves among the country’s emerging cricket talent.
Action is scheduled to begin at 09:00 hours on both days, and organisers are encouraging cricket enthusiasts, families, and supporters to come out in their numbers to witness the next generation of Guyanese cricketers in action.
With growing government backing and strong school participation, the Mike’s Pharmacy National Secondary Schools Tapeball Cricket Super League could mark a significant step forward in the continued development of grassroots cricket in Guyana.
