…Magistrate relaxes conditions
Kaieteur News – Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman on Monday issued a stern warning to sanctioned businessmen Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, after the court was told that the two men were not consistently reporting to the Ruimveldt Police Station within the stipulated time.
The issue was raised during a previous hearing of the extradition proceedings at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Prosecutors reminded the court that the Mohameds were required to report every Friday between 13:00hrs and 15:00hrs as part of their bail conditions, but had not always complied with the specified time.
In response, Magistrate Latchman cautioned the men about strictly adhering to the court’s orders.
She subsequently adjusted the reporting requirements, ruling that the Mohameds must now report to the Ruimveldt Police Station every Friday within a 24-hour period, except on Fridays when they are required to attend court. If a public holiday falls on a Friday, they must report to the station the day before.
Additionally, the court ordered that if either man is unable to report due to illness, a medical certificate must be presented to the police explaining the absence.

The revised conditions came after Prosecutor Glenn Hanoman raised concerns about what he described as untimely reporting by the two men.
Hanoman urged the court to either warn the surety that the Mohameds’ bail could be revoked, revoke the bail and remand the men, or impose stricter reporting requirements.
He argued that the Mohameds were “fortunate” to have been granted bail despite being classified as “fugitive offenders.”
However, defence attorneys Siand Dhurjon and Roysdale Forde, S.C., objected to the prosecution’s application. They told the court that the Mohameds had been reporting regularly, even if sometimes earlier or later on the same day, explaining that delays were due to legitimate reasons such as medical issues and court appearances.
The defence also asked the court to relax the reporting requirements, arguing that bail conditions are not intended as punishment but rather to ensure that the accused remain within the court’s jurisdiction.
After hearing submissions from both sides, Magistrate Latchman warned the Mohameds to comply with the court’s directives.
“It is crucial that you follow the court’s orders. You must seek perfection of character,” the magistrate told the men.
