Kaieteur News – Twenty-two-year-old Krishna Persaud of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara and his four-month-old son, Luke Persaud, lost their lives in an accident on Friday after the motorcycle they were on collided with a truck along the Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
A 19-year-old, the baby’s mother, who was also on the motorcycle, survived and is currently hospitalised.
According to police, the accident occurred around 11:00hrs and involved motor lorry GZZ 5068, driven by a 27-year-old man of Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, and motorcycle CM 5492, which was being driven by Persaud.

Dead: 4-month-old Luke Persaud
Police reported that the motor lorry was proceeding north out of a parking lot of a shopping mall situated on the southern parapet, when another lorry travelling west along the southern side of the road stopped and to allow the driver of GZZ 5068 to turn and proceed east.
As the driver attempted to make the turn, the motorcycle, which was travelling west along the southern side of the road at an alleged fast rate of speed, overtook the stationary lorry on the solid double yellow lines and ended up on the northern side of the road.

Dead: 22-year-old Krishna Persaud
The motorcycle then collided with the right-side front portion of the motor lorry. As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist and the two pillion riders were thrown onto the roadway and sustained multiple injuries. They were picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where Persaud and the infant were pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said the woman later regained consciousness and was admitted to the female surgical ward suffering from head and other injuries. Her condition has been listed as stable.
The bodies of the deceased are currently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Police said the driver of the motor lorry remains in custody assisting with investigations. A breathalyser test conducted on him showed no trace of alcohol. Investigators have also obtained CCTV footage as the probe continues.
Moreover, Tropical Orchard Products Company Limited (TOPCO) in a statement on Friday confirmed that one of its trucks was involved in the accident that claimed the lives of the man and his baby.
The company said it was deeply saddened by the incident and noted that the mother was left in critical condition following the crash. “On behalf of the management and staff of TOPCO, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this devastating tragedy,” the company said.
TOPCO also indicated that it is cooperating with investigators as the circumstances surrounding the accident are examined.
The company further stated that it will not provide additional comments at this time. “Out of respect for the grieving family and the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from further comment until more information becomes available.”

Careless operation of a motor cycle, inexperience, may have led to the
accident claiming lives of father and his baby, injuring the mother.
The roads are crowded with vehicles of every kind, including pedestrians
and bicyclists.
It seems no one, except the pedestrian, observes the posted speed limit.
THE TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT NEED TO OVERHAUL THE SPEED LIMIT
EVERYWHERE ON EVERY ROAD. LOWERING THE CURRENT SPEED
MAY EASE THE ACCIDENTS. THIS CANNOT BE ACHIEVED BY THE
USERS ALONE. THE POLICE NEED TO EFFECTIVELY TAKE CONTROL
AND PATROL THE ROADS UNINTERRUPTED, BY REMOVING THOSE
VIOLATING THE RULES/TRAFFIC REGULATIONS IN EVERY WAY.
Otherwise, the carnage will continue. The best drivers on the roads are not’
in Guyana, for sure.
