(Kaieteur News) – The Amerindian communities of Moraikobai in Region Five and Orealla/ Siparuta in Region Six will soon get new potable water wells through the Guyana Water Inc. (GWI).
Bids for these projects were opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB). The water well for Lower Moraikobai is estimated to cost $36.7 million, while the water wells for Siparuta and Orealla are estimated at $77.9 million.
Some $1.5 billion was approved for hinterland water supply under the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation in the 2026 national budget.During the presentation, Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh disclosed that last year over 90 wells were completed along with improvements to water distribution systems in the hinterland communities such as Kumaka, Kato, and Aishalton.
In 2026, he noted that the government will provide water access to over 37,000 hinterland residents through key interventions such as construction of new wells and water distribution systems, and deploying solar PV systems to enhance reliability and reduce operating cost.
“Procure and install electromechanical components and critical spares to ensure operational reliability and long-term sustainability of existing systems. Procure and install water treatment systems to address high iron content and salinity across hinterland townships and villages,” he explained.
During the reading of tenders several GWI projects were opened for Regions Seven and Eight.
