(Kaieteur News) – A violent domestic tragedy at No. 76 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, has left a mother fighting for her life and a father dead, leaving six siblings traumatised.
On Sunday evening, 46-year-old Mahendra Patrick Singh allegedly attacked his wife, 49-year-old Olive Thompson, with a knife in what police believe was an attempted murder. Thompson remains in critical condition at the No. 75 Village Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery after one of the stab wounds damaged her liver. Singh was found dead the next morning suspected to have ingested a poisonous substance.
The couple’s daughter, Chandra “Stephanie” Singh, 21, told Kaieteur News that she and several of her siblings had visited their parents earlier that day. According to her, nothing appeared out of the ordinary.
“We leave home to go by my brother in Rose Hall, and we leave them home. That was around 12:00-12:30 time. We even made plans to go (Number 63) Beach when we come back,” she recalled.
Shortly after arriving in Rose Hall, they received a frantic call from a neighbour.
“She said that daddy just stabbed mommy, and they are taking her to the hospital. We had to leave and come back home,” the young woman said.
Neighbours reported hearing Thompson screaming, “I gon’ dead, I gon’ dead,” as she attempted to flee the yard. She was quickly transported to the hospital. Singh was reportedly seen leaving the premises on his motorcycle, clad only in boxer shorts and covered in blood.
A search was mounted Sunday evening, but he was not located. On Monday at about 10:45 hrs, his body was discovered aback “Baker Shop Dam”, leading towards the Skeldon sugarcane cultivation area. Singh was employed at the Skeldon Sugar Estate.
Stephanie noted that the couple had recently celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on February 14, Valentine’s Day.
“The two were loving… everybody will get ups and downs yeah, but no sign that this would happen, no sign that they had an argument. We left them two good,” she said.
