…Pres. Ali hails company as ‘trusted partner’
…amid silence on reported oil reserve boost
(Kaieteur News) President Irfaan Ali has hailed ExxonMobil as the country’s trusted energy partner, assuring that Guyana offers a stable environment where investment is “safe, sound and protected.”
His comments come on the heels of reports that the company recently disclosed a growth in Guyana’s oil reserves to the shareholders of Exxon, while such information has not been shared with Guyana. Despite no new announcements were made in 2025, Exxon reported new discoveries and extensions in Guyana’s reserves to its investors.
With the company and government yet to offer any clarity in that regard, conversations persist around Guyana’s unequal benefits from the oil deal with Exxon, as the push continues for a negotiated Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) to offer balance.
Executive Directors of the Board of Exxon Mobil were greeted by the president and first lady, Arya Ali who hosted a welcome dinner for the visiting delegation on the evening of the country’s 56th Republic Anniversary.
Leading the Exxon delegation was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman, Darren Woods. Special invitees included Cabinet members, the business community, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir, Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Roxane George, Deputy Chief of Mission from the United States Embassy, John Crippen, Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken and Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan.
During remarks, Ali highlighted the golden opportunities that lie ahead, citing the need for strong and focused leadership, coupled with trust.
He said, “You cannot manage a sector like this if there is no trust. I want to make it very clear and I am unapologetic about this, Exxon is our partner and we have to work and confront the opportunities of the future as partners. There is no way we are separating ourselves from each other.”
To this end, the president offered the company reassurance of a stable environment. In a direct message to Exxon’s CEO, Ali said, “Here is where the rule of law applies and here is where investment is safe, sound and protected and that is how it will always be.”
The head-of-state shared Guyana’s ambition to continue building trust, with no greater affirmation than through such a visit by the “super structure” referring to the top executives of the company, who are in Georgetown for a board meeting.
“We find this not only remarkable but that this is a vote of confidence in the relationship and trust that we have built over the years,” the president noted.
For his part, the CEO and Chairman of ExxonMobil Corporation reminded of the company’s commitment to develop the country’s resources. Woods said, “Since our first discovery a little over 10 years ago, we’ve been committed to responsibly developing Guyana’s oil and natural gas resources. But just as importantly we’ve also been committed to ensuring that the oil and natural gas produced offshore creates opportunity for progress onshore. We share President Ali’s ambition in developing these resources to transform Guyana’s economy and bring enduring prosperity to its people.”
Meanwhile, president of ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL), Alistair Routledge reinforced the company’s commitment to Guyana. He said, “Guyana’s energy partner is more than a slogan to the people of ExxonMobil. It reflects our long-term commitment, supporting your vision for sustainable development and shared prosperity.”
Speaking directly to President Ali, Routledge expressed gratitude for his partnership. “Together we have achieved a great deal and there is still so much potential ahead of us,” he added.
