Kaieteur News – Days after his confrontation with a police rank in New Amsterdam, Berbice, a 24-year-old man was slapped with over a dozen charges connected to the incident, jailed and fined $400,000.
Keion Clarke, a mason of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice, was taken into custody on Wednesday by ranks in Regional Division Six following an operation carried out at his home.
Clarke was identified in the viral video showing a traffic rank being assaulted earlier this week while performing his duties. In the video, the mason is seen aggressively approaching the rank with a glass bottle in his hand.
On Thursday, he appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court where 13 charges were read to him. They are:
1. Unlicensed Driver – Section 23 (1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
2. Two (2) Counts of Dangerous Driving – Section 36(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
3. Failure to Have Identification Mark (Rear) – Section 13 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
4. Failure to Have Identification Mark (Front) – Section 13 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
5. Breach of Insurance – Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
6. Driving a Motor Vehicle without a Safety Helmet – Paragraph 3(1) of the Motor Cycle (Protective Helmet) Regulations, 1972.
7. Uncertified Motor Vehicle – Section 15 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
8. Failure to Stop When Required by a Police Officer in Uniform – Section 52(a) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
9. Fraudulently Imitating Identification Mark – Section 106(a) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
10. Disorderly Behaviour – Section 36(a) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02.
11. Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm – Section 30(a) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02.
12. Two (2) Counts of Damage to Property – Section 61 of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02.
13. Resisting a Peace Officer – Section 28(b) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02.
He pleaded guilty to the charges of failure to wear safety helmet – fined $25,000 or one month imprisonment; breach of Insurance – fined $25,000 or three months imprisonment, with his driver’s licence suspended for twelve months; failure to have identification mark (rear) – fined $150,000 and three months imprisonment; failure to have identification mark (front) – fined $150,000 and three months imprisonment; uncertified motor vehicle – fined $25,000 or one month imprisonment; unlicensed driver – fined $25,000 or two months imprisonment, totalling $400,000.
Clarke however, pleaded not guilty to the remaining charges. Bail was denied, and he was handed a six-month sentence for those matters. The other matters were deferred to March 5, 2026.
