Sand truck driver arrested in connection with West Coast fatal accident
(Kaieteur News) – A 42-year-old sand truck driver is currently in police custody following a fatal accident on Tuesday that claimed the life of a 64-year-old electric cycle rider on the West Coast of Demerara.
Dead is Roy Chanka of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara.
The fatal accident involving the sand truck and pensioner.
Police said the accident occurred at about 13:56hrs on February 17, 2026, along the Cornelia Ida Public Road and involved motor lorry GAD 7032, driven by a resident of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, and the electric cycle owned and ridden by Chanka.
Initial investigations revealed that the motor lorry was proceeding west along the southern side of the roadway and was in the process of turning south into the Cornelia Ida Access Road when the left front wheel of the vehicle collided with the electric cycle, which was also proceeding west along the southern side of the road.
As a result of the collision, Chanka fell onto the roadway and subsequently came into contact with the lorry, sustaining injuries about his body. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His body was later escorted to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. Police have since viewed and obtained CCTV footage from the area as part of their ongoing investigations. A breathalyser test administered to the driver revealed no trace of alcohol.
The driver remains in custody assisting with the investigation.
