(Kaieteur News) – A 24-year-old labourer of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice, was arrested on Tuesday after assaulting a traffic rank in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The arrest was made during an operation conducted between 02:30hrs and 02:55hrs on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at a residence in Sheet Anchor Village.
According to police, the operation was launched following the circulation of a video on social media showing a traffic rank performing his duties when he was confronted and assaulted by the suspect armed with a glass bottle. The video reportedly shows the suspect approaching the officer, striking him and then hurling the bottle in his direction.
During the operation, police seized one unregistered Haojue motorcycle, which was lodged pending investigations. The suspect is expected to be charged with Assault along with other related offences.
The Guyana Police Force in the statement strongly condemns any act of violence against ranks. “Assaulting a peace officer and interfering with police operations are serious offences and will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law,” police said.
Investigations are ongoing.
