(Kaieteur News) – The Committee of Supply on Friday approved $52.1 billion allocated in the 2026 National Budget to support further development initiatives under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The allocation caters for the construction and completion of several fire stations, along with the procurement of additional equipment for the Guyana Fire Service. A sum of $3.4 billion has been set aside for these works.
Funding has also been allocated for the expansion of community policing groups, operational expenses for the Special Organised Crime Unit, the Ministerial Task Force on Trafficking in Persons, and strengthened border patrol operations to enhance national security. A total of $56,864,000 has been budgeted for these initiatives.
Addressing traffic-related concerns, including speeding violations, Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond clarified that the budget also supports increased enforcement of the vehicle tint policy. This, she explained, is aimed at improving the ability of authorities to track criminals through surveillance systems. According to the Minister, while the Guyana Police Force is working to enhance criminal tracking through camera technology with facial recognition capabilities, excessively dark tint continues to hinder these efforts.
“With the use of CCTV cameras in apprehending criminals through facial recognition, the unlawful use of tint on vehicles has prevented a lot of that. So, it’s going to aid in that way in our crime detection,” she said.
Meanwhile, additional funding has been allocated for the training of police officers. The Minister also noted that several police living quarters will be upgraded.
“We are either building new ones or rehabilitating existing facilities,” the minister disclosed.
In total, $31,391,281,000 has been allocated to the Guyana Police Force.
