One year after $62M reconstruction, Charity Police Station set for $66M in additional works
…new tender seeks external waiting area and infrastructural upgrades
(Kaieteur News) – One year after the reconstructed $62.7 million Charity Police Station in Region Two was commissioned, the government is now planning to spend an estimated $66.8 million more on additional works at the facility, including the construction of an external waiting area.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, in its invitation for bids, sought contractors for the “construction of external waiting area, infrastructural works and rehab. to Charity Police Station.”

Bids for the project were opened on August 4 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office, with 23 bids received. The government’s engineer estimated the new works would cost $66,810,150, while contractors’ bids ranged from $47.9 million to $87 million.

Kaieteur News understands that this is the second tender issued by the ministry for works at the station since its reconstruction and commissioning. The previous invitation for bids was for the construction of a fence, for which the government had estimated a cost of $74 million — a sum that exceeded the $62 million spent to reconstruct the police station itself.
It was reported that in July 2025, former Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn commissioned the reconstructed Charity Police Station. The building, which cost $62.7 million, now features upgraded male, female, and juvenile lockups; a witness and ID parade room; marine and immigration offices; and CID and traffic departments, along with accommodation for officers.
The station also includes a child-friendly area and a unit dedicated to responding to domestic violence, making it one of the most modern and responsive stations in the region.
