(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys remember se story of a couple that retired and moved into Guyana’s interior to enjoy the peace and quite there. Nice breeze, plenty bush, not a soul to disturb them — except each other. Now all the children done migrate, marry off, or gone town, so the missus start feel that “empty nest” syndrome. She tell the old man she want adopt a puppy.
Not a cow. Not a sheep. A puppy.
The old man seh alright, because after forty years of marriage, sometimes you just nod and survive.
They get a cute lil brown puppy. De wife treat that puppy better than she ever treat the husband. Special food. Special bed. Bath with warm water. She even calling it “Mommy’s baby.”
The old man watching all this and feeling like he get replace by something that still teething. So one day, when the wife gone inside watching serial, he put the puppy in basket and walk deep into the jungle to stray de puppy.
When he reach back — the puppy sitting in the driveway wagging tail like it pay light bill. De man vex.
Next day he drive he go deeper into de jungle, pass some creeks and waterfalls. He drop de puppy in some bushes. Come back home. Puppy in the driveway again.
Now the old man pride hurt.
He decide this time he going deep interior. Two and a half hours into jungle over creek, over mountain. Till he reach land dat he never know existed. He drop off de puppy and head back home. After two hours on the way back, he get phone signal and call he wife.
“Honey… you home?”
“Yes, dear.”
“That puppy there by the house?”
“Yes, he sitting in the driveway. Why?”
The old man clear he throat and seh,
“Well leh me talk to he quick… because I lost.”
Talk half. Leff half.
