(Kaieteur News) – The Petra-organised inaugural Modec Tertiary Education Football Tournament continued in electric fashion on Wednesday at the Bayroc National Stadium, where Linden Technical Institute (LTI) secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) in the first leg of their home-and-away showdown.
LTI wasted little time stamping their authority on the contest. Just nine minutes in, Darnell Profit capitalised on an open look at goal, calmly dabbing home to give the Linden side an early 1-0 advantage. It was a confident start that set the tone for the first half, with LTI controlling the midfield battle and enjoying a commanding share of possession heading into the break.
The second half brought more intent from the home side. In the 56th minute, Kemani Field tried his luck with a cheeky effort on goal — and it paid off. His strike doubled LTI’s lead, pushing them firmly into the driver’s seat at 2-0. But CPCE refused to roll over.
The Georgetown-based unit kept pressing, and their persistence paid dividends in the 70th minute when Trevon George pounced on a loose ball inside the six-yard box and rifled a flat, powerful strike into the net to cut the deficit to 2-1. Momentum nearly swung completely five minutes later as George unleashed another attempt that rattled the crossbar, leaving LTI breathing a sigh of relief.
With three minutes of added time, CPCE searched desperately for the equaliser, but LTI’s defense held firm to seal a slim yet crucial 2-1 win in front of their home supporters.
Tuesday’s action delivered fireworks of its own. Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre ran riot against University of Guyana TAIN Campus, hammering them 6-0 in a commanding display. Joshua Marshall led the demolition job with a clinical hat-trick to open his tournament account in style.
In the other fixture, New Amsterdam Technical Institute edged Port Mourant Technical Institute 2-1 to claim their first points of the championship.
The tournament, coordinated by the Petra Organisation, continues to gather momentum with Modec Guyana as title sponsor and support from Macrop, MVP Sports, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Banks Powerade.
