(Kaieteur News) – Between 2020 and 2025, the Government of Guyana invested $25.4 billion in renewable energy projects, expanding national installed capacity from 5.35 megawatts (MW) to 37.23 MW, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips disclosed on Friday night.
Phillips who has some oversight of the energy sector provided a list of achievements under the portfolio, while sharing brief plans for this year.
In this year’s $1.558 trillion budget, government has set aside $119.4 billion to continue implementing its energy strategy.
Highlighting some of the notable achievements of the sector, the Prime Minister said that over the past five years, the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) has played a central role in advancing government’s commitment to affordable, reliable and renewable energy, particularly for hinterland and riverain communities.
“Between 2020 and 2025, Government invested G$25.4 billion in renewable energy interventions. Over this period, installed renewable capacity increased from 5.35 MW to 37.23 MW, while more than 4,500 jobs were created across construction, installation, operations and maintenance,” the PM said.
He noted that a key pillar of this effort has been household electrification, with 37,230 solar home energy systems distributed nationwide, bringing installed capacity of approximately 6MW through a G$2.17 billion investment.
Additionally, he noted that utility-scale renewable generation also expanded. “Solar PV farms were commissioned in Lethem, Bartica, Mahdia and Leguan, alongside hydropower facilities at Kumu and MocoMoco,” the PM said. Collectively, these projects generated more than 17,164 MWh of renewable electricity, saving over 29,919 drums of diesel and approximately 13,247 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Another achievement highlighted by the PM was the expansion in the solar mini-grids. According to him, 36 solar mini-grids now supply renewable electricity to 518 public and community buildings across multiple regions, including schools, health centres and village offices. In the meantime, 21 additional mini-grids are under construction which will power 240 buildings more by the end of 2026. Additionally, 75 government facilities have been equipped with solar PV systems totalling 208 kW, while 6 agro-processing facilities were outfitted with 167.75 kW of solar PV and battery storage to support local production.
Shifting his attention to this year’s objectives, PM Phillips informed the House that the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) is poised to benefit from a 3 MW solar PV farm, which will be constructed this year.
