(Kaieteur News) – One man has been killed and two others injured during a shooting incident on James Street Albouystown, Georgetown Thursday evening. Dead is Kevon Ridley of Albouystown.
The injured were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. According to a police report the crime was allegedly committed by a man known to the victims.
Police ranks visited the scene at about 18:25 hrs. Investigations revealed that at the time of the incident, Ridley was in the company of his friend, Kishi Thomas, a 30-year-old Guyanese male of African descent, a vendor of Lot 127 King Edward Street, Albouystown. Both men were standing in front of Ridley’s yard, engaging in conversation, when the suspect
who is known to Thomas for several years suddenly approached them armed with a handgun and discharged several rounds in their direction.
According to Thomas, both he and Ridley fell to the ground after the shots were fired. Thomas later realised that he had been shot in his back and observed that Ridley was motionless. The suspect subsequently escaped in an unknown direction.
Thomas further stated that several persons in the area went to their assistance and transported both victims to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Upon arrival, Ridley was pronounced dead by a medical doctor. The deceased sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was later escorted to the hospital’s mortuary, where the body is awaiting a post-mortem examination (PME).
Thomas sustained one gunshot wound to his back and is currently receiving medical treatment. His condition is listed as stable.
Based on information received, police ranks proceeded to the Balwant Singh Hospital, where they made contact with Cornel Gray, a 43-year-old Guyanese male of African descent, a spray painter of Lot 4023 Lust-en-Rust, West Bank Demerara. Gray operates a workshop on James Street, Albouystown, west of the deceased’s residence. He reported that at the time of the incident, he was in his workshop when he heard several loud explosions suspected to be gunshots. He then felt a burning sensation to his left shoulder and realised he had been shot. He subsequently sought medical attention at the hospital. His condition is also reported as stable.
The crime scene was processed by ranks from the Crime Scene Unit and CID Headquarters. Several spent shells and one warhead were recovered from the scene. Multiple persons were questioned, and several CCTV cameras were observed in the area. These recordings will be reviewed as part of the investigation.
Efforts are currently ongoing to locate the suspect. Investigations are continuing.
At the scene a man related that when he arrived he saw Riddley on the ground with gunshot wounds to his stomach. “Right here I come around there and see duh I say leh I go long back home.”
” I hear nuff gun shots 15 to 16 shots fire. First about four fire and me ain’t come out I stay in me yard. Then I see everybody running then we hear the rest of the shots firing and I say leh I go back because me ain’t looking to let no stray bullet knock me.
I see me neighbour deh wuh working in the workshop get shoot and he lay down and they pick he up and put he in a car and carry he hospital. That’s all.”
Back in 2023 Kaieteur News had reported that Ridley who was wanted at the time in connection with a series of armed robberies as well as the discharging a loaded firearm at Lime Street, Werk-en-Rust on December 23, 2023 was arrested by police.
Reports were that during a raid conducted by ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) “under the clock” in the Stabroek Market area.
Ridley who also goes by the alias ‘Arthur’ was nabbed. Police said then that he was found with a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be Cannabis.
He was then escorted to the Brickdam Police Station where the suspected narcotics were weighed and amounted to 18 grams.
In April 2017 at the age of 18 Riddley was remanded to prison by City Magistrate Fabayo Azore for robbing Linden Roberts of three gold chains valued $360,000 on March 24 of that same year while being in the company of another individual and armed with a gun. Ridley pleaded not guilty to the charge.
