(Kaieteur News) – A 28-year-old labourer was on Wednesday granted $700,000 bail after he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, when he appeared at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, Shawn Sargeant, a construction worker and resident of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), is alleged to have caused the death of 33-year-old Jason Bhojedat, a distillery plant manager at Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and a resident of Annandale, East Coast Demerara.
The accident occurred on Sunday at about 23:30 hrs and involved a minibus, BAK 8702, driven by Bhojedat, and a motor car, PKK 6633, driven by Sargeant. Following the incident, Sargeant was arrested and subsequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
Unrepresented, Sargeant appeared before Magistrate Delon Bess, who read the charge to him. He was not required to plead and was granted bail in the sum of $700,000.
The matter has been adjourned to February 26, 2026.
According to police report, Sargeant was travelling south along the eastern driving lane at a fast rate, following closely behind Bhojedat’s minibus. While attempting to overtake the minibus, Sargeant collided with its right rear. As a result of the impact, the minibus struck a light pole, overturned several times, and came to a stop on the western parapet. “Bhojedat was flung from the vehicle and fell onto the roadway in an unconscious state,” police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 31-year-old man of Diamond New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, who was a passenger in the minibus, sustained multiple injuries.
