(Kaieteur News) – For those who anticipated that the process for election of the Leader of the Opposition (LOO) would be smooth sailing, that just got smashed to pieces. Only the State-owned National Communications Network (NCN) will be allowed to observe the proceedings firsthand.
Something is afoot, and the distinct impression is that the PPP/C Government has some trick up its sleeve. There is alarm that some sort of fix could be on the move to thwart what should be nothing but a formality. NCN is among the most biased of media presences in Guyana, the least credible monitor for what has been riddled with delay, controversy, and disgraceful conduct in and out of parliament.
What could the government be up to, what last minute shocker it has orchestrated and is ready to unveil in the election of the LOO, but with only NCN to be the witness? Guyanese could not have a more distrusted witness, the worst of options, for a process that needs to emphasise that resistance to We Invest In Nationhood’s (WIN) Azruddin Mohamed as LOO is over, and that progress has been made. How can that be, when the rest of Guyana’s media houses are blocked from being inside the parliamentary space where a new kind of history was seemingly set to be made? In its obsession with more and more control, the sacred ground that is parliament and its work is being walked over and made into a mockery.
Why this unpardonable action is taken in a most watched of local political issues, when throughout the years the media has been allowed the freest access to parliament to cover and inform citizens? Why has that changed, and why in this situation, which has attracted so much media attention, and which requires as many media eyes as are available to report on the LOO election process, is now subject to this mysterious twist? This is yet another uncalled-for degradation of the work of the mainstream media, and must rank as an affront to all Guyanese. This has gone on too long, and it should not be taken sitting down by both the media, and Guyanese interested in what is fair and democratic.
The PPP/C Government has not been smooth or nuanced in its determination to sabotage Mohamed’s path to his rightful election as LOO. Instead, the government, using the Speaker as its agent, has already engaged in the crass and sickening, to block the election of Mohamed to be the LOO. Where is the government going to go now, and could it be that it has another dubious arrangement all locked up and ready to unload as its Monday surprise? Whatever it has in store, we at this paper condemn in the strongest terms possible. If ever there was a development that is unacceptable because it is so outrageous, this media lockout is it.
In last year’s elections, the PPP/C garnered the untouchable advantage of a seven-seat majority in parliament. It is baffling that a government that is so on top of the world could now reach so low, as though it harbours some great desperation, is fearful of being toppled. In making a complete fool of itself, the ruling party’s leadership doesn’t fool any citizen about its ultimate objective. Delay and deny Mohamed and his party, and hope that the judiciary rules in the manner that the government desires on extradition proceedings. Democracy keeps losing ground in Guyana, while parliamentary democracy is scorned and kicked about to suit the twisted visions of the government’s leadership.
In any country, where the government is driven to madness by its quest for control and more control, it will cross any line, and use any means to achieve its sordid ends. We have seen this with the PPP/C Government before, and even at more nauseating levels, since its mandate to continue in power was given last year. Even when placing the brightest gloss on the PPP/C Government and its inexplicable actions, there is a conclusion that cannot be shaken. This bears all the features of political leadership that is drunk with arrogance and sick to its core. The government is miscalculating and overstepping on this LOO process, and we denounce it outright.
