(Kaieteur News) – Five ranks of the Joint Services and an officer of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) were forced to swim to safety after the boat they were traveling in at Normandy Crossing, South Pakaraimas sank.
In a statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that the incident which occurred at about 08:10h at Karasabi Village, is being investigated.
“The ranks were boarding an 18-foot aluminium boat at the landing for a joint operation along the Rupununi River when the vessel sank shortly after departing the landing, forcing all occupants to swim safely to the river bank,” police said.
No injuries were reported. However, a number of ammunition as well as three service rifles were reported missing.
Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force are currently engaged in recovery efforts in the area as investigations continue.
