(Kaieteur News) – Supporters of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) led by party leader Azruddin Mohamed, protested outside of the Eccles, East Bank Demerara home of Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir Tuesday evening, demanding the immediate election of the opposition leader.
“Call the meeting now!” a small but growing crowd shouted from streets of the quiet residential area where Nadir lives.
The demonstration, though not violent, attracted police presence. Several senior ranks of the Guyana Police Force converged at the scene urging the crowd to end the exercise and leave the area.

“I’m telling you that your protest is disturbing the neighbourhood sir…” An officer in civilian clothing could be heard informing Mohamed on a live broadcast streamed on Team Mohamed Facebook page.
The growing police presence caused WIN Member of Parliament, Odessa Primus to remark “this is the type of government we have in place; a government, who weaponises the state against its citizens. Tell me why all these officers out here, to stop a peaceful protest.”
Another WIN supporter explained that he was there to ensure that democracy prevails.
He said “How could they [the government] tell Guyanese people that you care and when you and see through the length and breadth of Guyana that people suffering. Guyanese fed up. Enough is enough! I don’t care what happens, I know we need an opposition leader. I want y’all to understand that without an opposition leader there should be no budget because rest assured that will be a dictatorship.”
Another man said that his call for the opposition leader to be in place, is because “We have to be able to resist dictatorship in country, we don’t want a police state and so we are doing what we must to let democracy prevail.”
He continued “Imagine all the European and not American countries have called upon them to allow the leader of the opposition to be sworn in. At present, I believe Guyana is the only country in the world that does not have a parliament with an opposition leader in place. You can recall the Jamaican elections were after us and you can recall that within a week, the opposition in Jamaica was elected. Why is it that that we in this country that call ourselves a democratic society are not doing that?”
Moments later, Mohamed stilled the crowd and signaled that he wanted to make a statement.
“They exhaust all ends and tried everything possible. A lot of persecution for myself, the WIN MPs and the people of this country face at the hands of Jagdeo, Irfaan Ali, Nandlall and the PPP but we have some good news from Manzoor Nadir he just announced that on Monday morning 10 am we will get the meeting to elect the leader of the opposition,” The WIN leader said as the crowd erupted with cheers.
He continued “but I have a stern message to Jagdeo, Irfaan Ali, Nandlall and the PPP that is that I am not a walk over. They threw everything at me every single thing possible and I am still standing and we will stand strong; we will stand together and we will represent the people of this country. We will ensure that we hold them accountable every second of the day. This is first time in the history of this country that we got a real opposition.”
“I want to thank the people of this country for those supporting and praying for us. Monday will be business as usual; we will make sure we hold them accountable every second of the day democracy and the rule of law must prevail in this land.”
